Day 125 - Matka Canyon - Dinner with new friends

Sunday, November 4th, 2018.

Today we planned our last day at the last minute. We asked our Airbnb host, Zlatko, to drive us to Matka Canyon and it was well worth the ride. It probably would have been cheaper just to take the bus, but we have learned that it can take a very long time.

Zlatko said, "Today, I'm your driver, your guide, your photographer, your everything." He took his job very seriously because the moment we got there, he started to take pictures like crazy. He said, "If you don't like, you delete." We hiked through this stunning canyon along a lake and took some great pictures. Too bad we didn't have more time because the kayak rentals were actually affordable, but no one seemed super excited so we had a coffee and drove back to Skopje. We asked him to drop us at the bus station so we could buy the tickets for our next destination: Sofia, Bulgaria. We got the tickets and then we walked to a shopping mall looking for an ATM. By that point, we were all hungry but no one would admit it. Gregory persevered and dragged me to the food court, where we found a buffet restaurant. We feasted on huge portions of freshly cooked food for about $11 total.

After that, we walked home, saw all the impressive and fake statues for the last time. Gregory and Sunshine walked to the old bazaar looking for her bracelet and Daniel and I walked to the grocery store to get food for the bus. When we made it home, I was happy just to stay home and watch a movie but the Rotarian president and his family invited us for coffee at 7:00pm. We love to meet new people and learn about their culture. Sunshine was very excited to go out with a girl her age. Daniel, on the other hand, was tired and was looking forward to talking to his friends in the US. We left Daniel at home and we went to the restaurant to mee the family at a restaurant well outside the usual tourist area.

We had a lovely time talking about their country, the sculptures sponsored by the Saudi Arabians, and how bad unemployment is here. The family had 3 girls and two of them were doctors living and working in London. The youngest one name was Isabella, just like Sunshine. She was very sweet and immediately talked to Sunshine, and the two of them walked to the bowling alley at the mall to play. Sunshine said that they connected immediately and had a good time.

We finished at 10:00pm and I was getting nervous because tomorrow we were leaving at 8:30am bus to Sofia. We took a taxi home, made it home to finish packing (mostly the food) and to make the sandwiches for the bus. We went to bed at midnight, not my favorite thing but it didn't matter because we had a great day. We look forward to seeing the family if they come to California.

Breathtaking views

The Harris family collected a whole bag of trash on our hike. Boy and Girl Scout rule yeah!

Hostel Amigo should be called Hostel Gato

When you try to check your receipt to see how much each item of food cost but you don't read Cyrillic! Don't freak out, $587 DEN is about $12 for lunch for 3, Sunshine had an ice-cream!
