Day 301 - Hoi An
Saturday, May 4th, 2019.
Today was a day of rest. Part of me wanted to tour the city but I decided to listen to my body which only wanted to rest. It was more like my cold pulling me back to bed. I read and napped right after breakfast.
Late in the afternoon, we decided to borrow bicycles from the hotel and bike to the old town. We stopped first in a cafe for lunch. The service was terrible and the food was just OK. By the time we finished, we decided to return the bikes and call Grab to go to old town -- there was no way we were going to make it back before dark.
By the time we made it to town, it was 6:00pm. Oops! People were starting to light all the lanterns. It looked beautiful. The streets were alive! We stopped for ice cream. I enjoyed passion fruit, since I can't find that flavor at home. Then we walked slowly with all the people down the streets full of stores selling clothing, fabrics, shoes and other things when suddenly, I saw a familiar face on the street! I got excited and said, "hello stranger!" It was the Kiwi family we had met on the train a few days ago! We even hugged. It's just so nice to find a familiar face. I guess it's the longing for friends! We chatted for a while and then we split up but met up again by the river.
After our second chat, we split again because there were going out for dinner. Gregory was feeling tired so we found a cute cafe called the Bird Cage. It was adorable, they had bird cages all around and even some of the chairs were in the form of birdcages and people sat inside! It was a little bit expensive (compared to Vietnam, but still way less than we would pay at home).
I wanted to walk more around the old town but Gregory was very tired. I honestly think he is still fighting that cold but he doesn't rest like I do. We crossed the famous Japanese bridge, saw many more shops in historical wooden buildings and then we ordered a car to take us back to our hotel.
Gregory went to bed at 8:30pm. I went to the kids' bedroom and finished reading my awesome book, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, who also wrote The Kite Runner. It is a sad book but very moving. I highly recommend it!
