Day 262 - Ngwe Saung Beach

Tuesday, March 26th, 2019

We arrived at the beach at 6:00am. It wasn’t a bad ride and we did get some sleep on the bus. The bus made several stops, dropping people in different hotels. The driver’s assistant told us that they would drop us near our hotel, the Blue Water Resort. We still had to walk a short way down the unpaved road. It wasn’t bad but when you first arrive at a place you don’t know and you don’t speak the language and you see that the roads are not paved, well, you want to run back to where you came from! [Gregory's note: those of us without a sense of adventure, or who maybe forgot to do their research on where we were going, might want to run back.]

The street looked like a small village, with the unpaved road, several little stands and some restaurants with plastic tables and plastic chairs. I started to get nervous about our hotel but luckily it was one of the modern buildings. The receptionist was sleeping on the floor when we arrived. Gregory didn’t want to wake him up but by then it was almost 7:00am and I told him it was a decent hour to arrive! A lady opened the door for us, woke up the guy, and went to call the manager who came immediately. He let us check in early and have breakfast (very nice of them)!

They gave us our room and Gregory and Sunshine immediately went back to their rooms to sleep. Danny and I wanted to see the beach. The bummer is that we have to walk about 5 minutes down the dirt road to make it to the beach. No big deal but in the middle of the day, oh well at least we have a pool. We passed many guest houses and hotels without pools. When we arrived at the beach, we saw some trash which makes me sad and angry but then seeing the beautiful and peaceful ocean made me all happy again!

The beach is not one of those gorgeous clear water and powder sand beaches. [Gregory's note: it is golden sand and waves.] Honestly, the beaches in Mexico are much better. [Gregory's note: oh no, here we go again.] This one reminded me like Manzanillo or Mazatlan, except that it was almost deserted. We walked for a while and I started to look for huts or a place where we could sit with a shade. There were some colorful umbrellas and plastic chairs and tables on one side but nothing else on the other side. We walked to a nice grassy area with chairs but it read: only for guests. Oh well, we will have to find someplace to sit every day.

Daniel and I walked back to the hotel and I went back to bed. Daniel waited outside his room because Sunshine was sleeping. We woke up at 9:30 and went outside for breakfast. Another nice touch because we were not supposed to get breakfast that day!

After that, we put on our swimsuits and went to explore the beach. Thank God, Gregory didn't like the cheap plastic chairs and umbrellas. Many people came up, inviting us to their umbrellas to have a drink or something to eat. More reasons to walk to the other direction where the beach looked deserted.

We found some empty lounge chairs under palapas, and we walked towards them. The guard immediately came over and escorted Gregory to ask if we could rent the chairs. While he did that, I stayed in the shade and the kids went swimming in the ocean! Gregory came back and told us that the chairs were $10 each and we needed 4, or we could spend time out by the pool if we ordered a drink but I told him that we wanted to stay on the beach so he went back to the resort to have his beer.

While I was waiting on the chair for him, an employee from the hotel brought me mattresses and towels. I was embarrassed and said no, but he insisted and I ended up accepting it.

At first I was uncomfortable and when I saw a security guy walking towards me, I thought he was going to kick me out but no one bothered us! Gregory came back with our drinks and explained that the security guy had allowed him to stay because we had bought the drinks. Around 2:00pm, we were all done and decided to leave.

We walked back by the water to get some breeze, then out to the village to find a place to eat. We ate traditional dishes in a local restaurant. Daniel was happy with his sweet and sour chicken. It's Sunshine who worries me because she hasn’t been feeling well and has been eating very little. Her shorts that were tight in Italy are now loose.

After lunch, we were all thrilled to go back to the hotel and jump in the pool. We are staying in a small hotel but the kids thought it was fancy. Poor things, I’m not complaining but is not fancy at all. It is a 3-star hotel but it is great for $25 a night per room with breakfast included! The only bummer is that there is no hot water and there is a schedule for electricity, AC and Wifi, but it is like this in the whole village. [Gregory's note: there is no municipal electricity yet, so they fire up the generator from noon to 3:30 and from 6pm to 6am. The Wifi lasts almost all day and they have battery power in the outdoor office. I recommended solar, but the owner would rather pay for diesel and then pay the city when they finally get around to providing power.]

I’m just happy to have some real vacations where there is nothing to do. We'll see how long Gregory lasts without doing anything! [Gregory's note: challenge accepted! By the way, Ngwe Saung is pronounced like Way-song but with a nasal ng at the beginning and a round O.]
