Day 256 - Bangkok to Yangon

Wednesday, March 20th.

Today we woke up late at our hotel in Bangkok. It felt so weird to wake up in a different country that is not India. My mind and the images in my head are still in India, maybe because I’m reading The Red Sari, which is a historical novel about Indira Gandhi and her daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi, the Italian who married her son. I highly recommend it, but it does influence my mind.

Anyway, we just hung around in the hotel until it was time to check out at noon. Even if our flight was not until 4:50pm, we decided to go to the airport early to use the lounge. Gregory had read that it was a good one. The airport was big, clean, and luxurious and had some Thai Buddhist sculptures all over. We went through security and all the checkpoints and by the time we made it to the lounge it was 2:00.

I think Daniel’s favorite part of the trip is the airport lounges because of the food and the fast Wifi. The food was amazing and very different curries than in India. The change was great and we all enjoyed the food
very much. Sunshine and I worked on the Girl Scout Gold Award -- actually, I mostly pushed her to do it! Before we knew it, it was time to go. We actually walked quickly to the gate when the flight was boarding, just like Gregory likes it!

The flight was quick and smooth. They fed us on the short flight, but the meal was duck -- what a change of culture. No one ate it and I even told the flight attendant that we hadn't touched it, but he said that they still have to throw it away. It just hurts my heart to think of wasting food after seeing so much poverty in India! I was not nervous when we landed but I have to confess that I didn’t do any research about Myanmar, our destination for the next three weeks.

I was surprised to see the men wearing the longyi, which looks like a long skirt. Some of the women had their cheeks painted with a yellowish paste. It was just so different from what we have been seeing. Too bad that they don’t allow to take pictures at the airport customs desks because we have seen so many different cultures and outfits. I would have loved to compare outfits of the officers from Israel, Dubai, Africa, and here!

Gregory requested a ride (here the app is called Grab) that took us to our hotel which seems to be on a busy street. We got the luxury family room which is really one long room with two twin beds and one king bed. The funny part is that it has two bathrooms, one of each side, with showers that get the whole bathroom wet because there is no frame or curtain to divide the shower. I still don’t understand why don’t they built Western showers! The one bedroom has two TVs that are only 1 meter apart so I just hope that we don’t watch TV at the same time!

I think we are all very happy to be done with India. Happy that we can cross it off our list. I did enjoy parts but I would not go back!
