Day 231 - Stay At Home Day, Daniel and Gregory venture out to the Dubai Mall, Fountain Show and Tallest Building
Friday, February 22, 2019.
When I woke up, I had no idea where I was, then I remembered our situation. We were sharing an apartment with the owner and the maid. It felt weird but we started to think that for 5 more nights it might not be that bad, plus there were only two places available and one wasn't even in Dubai.
We took a shower and then had a small breakfast of tea and cookies saved from yesterday’s flight. Good thing everyone saved cookies or crackers because that’s all we had for food. Later we went out for lunch to a cafe nearby called Winners1 and had delicious Indian food for an affordable price. Afterward, we walked to the supermarket to get food for the week. When we came home, we were all tired so we just sat in the living room to use our electronics. I took a short nap but I was still very tired.
Gregory and Daniel went out to see the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, plus the fountain light show while Sunshine and I stayed home to watch a movie. Part of me wanted to make the effort to go out and see Dubai -- I mean, we didn't fly this far to spend the first day at home -- but Sunshine didn’t want to go and I didn’t want to leave her alone with the boss (who we met in the morning and seemed pretty nice, but again, a man I don’t know) and the maid.
I’m glad we stayed because we were both tired. Gregory and Daniel had a blast. They came back home around 11:00pm. Daniel told us they walked about 25 minutes to find the metro station but he said that it was worth it because they saw an amazing light and water show in front of the tallest building. He was very happy. We all went to bed late again.
And now it's time for:
Story Time with Daniel
Around 6 in the evening, Paps (Gregory) and I left to go to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, and see the Dubai Fountain, the largest choreographed fountain show in the world. Dubai is all about having the biggest and best. We walked quite far to the nearest metro stop, and prayer hour had just ended during our walk, meaning lots of people coming out of the mosque.
We saw what we thought was the metro stop so we climbed up the ramp (the rail is above the street) only to find that it was just a bridge to cross the street. We climbed back down and spotted what had to be a metro stop, a very large tinted glass tunnel surrounding the metro rail. After what felt like 45 minutes, we reached the stop. Once inside we found out how to use the ticket machine and paid for the surprisingly expensive metro tickets, then ascended the stairs to the platform. It seemed just like the metros in western Europe, a bit nicer than Paris, but a lot like the Istanbul metro. (But it had free Wi-Fi! [but only for people with a UAE phone number.])
After a 20 minute ride, we arrived at The Dubai Mall, which is right next to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain. The metro station is not located close by to the mall. We walked 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) on electric walkways and arrived inside the mall. There were no signs saying exit so we walked with everyone else and ended up passing by all of the tech stores. We entered one because it had the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, and S10+. They were announced 1 day ago, and here I was, trying one out!
After feeling rich for 10 minutes we left the store, heading towards the fountain exit. The mall was huge! It's almost 6 million square feet! We found the exit around 15 minutes before the show started and there were already so many people outside. Paps and I squeezed into spots on the bridge and waited 7 minutes for the show to start. It was really cool but the song wasn't very good. After the show, we stayed on the bridge and pretty much everyone left. We stayed and 15 minutes later more people started to come back for another show, but luckily we already had seats! This time the song was Thriller by Michael Jackson! The fountains looked like they danced to the music and it was really well done. Once the show ended, we decided to take an Uber instead of the metro because it was a lot easier. Our driver was really nice and when we arrived in our apartment I was ready to go to bed. That was a fun night.
