Day 229 - Last day in Tanzania - Mt. Meru Hotel pool - Goodbye to Friends in Ilboru

Wednesday, February 20th, 2019.

Today is our last day in Tanzania. We first visited the Cultural Heritage Museum which is actually an art gallery. They have beautiful and unique but very expensive paintings and sculptures. They also have what looks like a small Maasai village where each hut is a different store. One sells crafts from the Maasai, other has tanzanite jewelry, another one sculptures, and so on. We only spent an hour there when Peter, the driver we met the other day, came to take us to Mt. Meru Hotel to go swimming. Gregory went to the Rotary meeting.

Mt. Meru Hotel is a five-star hotel, and it is beautiful! Sunshine said that she felt bad using the fancy facilities knowing that there so much poverty outside. I love her! I paid for the kids to use the pool. I was dying to swim myself but I didn't want to risk my burn and get an infection.

We met with Kristin, our friend from Australia whom we met on our safari. Gregory arrived early from the meeting and joined us. We decided to splurge on a pizza and had lunch at the hotel. We truly had a good time there. Around 5:00pm, we went to Ilboru to say goodbye to Daniel and his family. We only spend one hour there -- everyone seemed sad, including Declan, who was worried about paying his bills. Daniel (not mine, the other one) was very serious as well, I asked him if he was ok and he said yes but clearly, something was upsetting him. He called Doreen so we could say goodbye to her as well. Catherine, his younger sister, came later and we just sat outside for a while. It was a little awkward because we didn't have much to say. Peter arrived and we all said goodbye and hugged each other with the hope that we would meet again.

As I was getting in the car, Daniel (again, not mine) gave me a bag full of gifts. I had the driver stop and go back to return them. He had grabbed so many things from his Mom's store that we just couldn't accept it. We explained to Daniel that we just couldn't carry all those presents but really it was because there were too many and they need the money. I accepted a scarf and two bracelets! I cried, I felt sad to leave Africa and our sweet friends!

We drove home, had dinner, and finished packing.
