Day 194 -Bye bye Lalibela - back to Addis Ababa
Sunday, January 13, 2019.
Today, believe it or not, I woke up at 4:58am, well to go to the bathroom. I heard some chanting and I kind of wanted to get dressed and walk with the SOS group to go to mass. They were all meeting at 5:30am at the front door. Part of me really wanted to see the ceremony of the Orthodox Christians but I remembered David saying that the church was going to be as crowded as in the market and I changed my mind. I felt sad because I should have made the effort to go to mass and instead, I chose the comfort of my bed.

Anyway, I went back to sleep until 7:40am. We got up and got ready to go for breakfast. The meal was included and we had a delicious vegetable omelet, papaya juice, and toast and jelly. The owner of the hotel chats and ate with us. He was very nice and friendly. After we finished, Gregory and I went for a walk, to the other side of town and discovered cute souvenir stores. I felt bad for not buying anything but we can’t carry things!
We left the hotel at 11:00am to the airport. The road was bumpy and it took like half an hour to get there. Everything went smooth, the flight was short and pleasant but after picking up our suitcases and going outside to get a taxi, I thought to myself: here we go again negotiating for a fee with the taxi drivers.
They didn’t want to take us for the price that the BnB place gave Gregory. He had to call the BnB owner to talk to them on the phone for a better fee. They finally agreed and they drove us to the guest house which was not on a nice street. It is weird because it is supposed to be a nice area, but the guest house is on a dirt road and next to small business made with aluminum roofs. Editors note: the place we were staying was on the main street right behind a fancy shopping mall. At least, it was clean and I promised myself not to get depressed with the places we stay. I have to remind myself that we are only passing by. We settled in our rooms and then went out for lunch. We actually found a cute and clean place around the corner that only sold hamburgers. It was delicious and we all had a delicious meal. According to Gregorio, it was expensive, it came to 25 dollars only but he thinks that because we are in a poor country, everything should be dirt cheap. We have also found out that hotels and guest house can be expensive in Ethiopia. After lunch, the kids and I came to the BnB to rest. I’m still very tired and I wish we could stay longer in one place but because we can’t find a decent place to stay (within our tight budget) we have to keep looking.
Luckily we are only staying two nights in this place which is not great and not cheap. Tomorrow, we are going to see two places with a kitchen. After we settle, then we need to plan the rest of our stay here.
I’m homesick and very tired of moving around. I’m tired of constantly having to find places to stay, researching how is the neighborhood, searching for the best prices, for food, for the things to visit and see in each place. I’m tired and I just want to sleep. Good night, until tomorrow.
