Day 155 - Jerusalem - Yad Vashem
Wednesday, December 5th, 2018.
I have to say that the hard part of this trip is making decisions. We were going to the dead sea today but the night before, we changed the plans because we finished dinner too late and we were all going to be tired. But then, we didn't know what to do and again, we just want to take advantage of our time here. We finally decided to go back to Jerusalem to go visit the museum Yad Vashem and the other parts of the city that we missed. We left an hour later than last time but now we live closer to the bus station. When we got there, we knew what to do, so we put some money on our cards and got on the bus. Oh boy, was I wrong, there was a lot of traffic, so it took a while to get there. We took the tram and we finally made it to the museum around 11:00am. There is a free shuttle that takes you to the museum, it is a short distance but it is down a hill. When we got there, we bought a map because the museum is really big. Later we discovered that the map was not necessary but anyway, a donation!
The structure of the museum is very impressive. First, to walk in, there is a long corridor, when you arrive, you see different rooms in the shape of a triangle. The most impressive part is that we stayed there for two hours and we only covered 2 rooms, but we were all hungry and decided to go out to eat our sandwiches. Well, we couldn't just walk out, it felt like we were trapped, we had to walk room by room all the way back. The architect really did his job and made you feel like you were trapped and couldn't find the exit!
We sat outside to eat our lunches and at one point, I don't even remember why I just started crying and I couldn't stop myself. The stories and the pictures are all so powerful. It is so sad to see and believe that so much pain happened and even worse, happened again in Sarajevo.
After eating, I felt better and we went back in. Poor Daniel, he was done but there was so much to see and learn. The way they displayed the information and material with all sorts of media, tv, radio, music, photos, objects, posters, signs, so much. In the end, each room was for different countries. It reminded me of some of the books that I had read in my book club about the war. For example, the novel about the people fleeing Denmark. We also saw information about the Jews that were not sent from Bulgaria to Germany and we heard this in the tour in Sofia. We also saw the original list of Schlinder hanging on the wall. We spent another 3 and a half hours and when you finally make it to the end, when the Jewish people are rescued and the end of the war, you could hear the music of victory. In the end, you see a crystal door and where you open you feel the air and see the sky! Very well done!
We walked some more around different buildings trying to find the exit. We did, we took the free shuttle, the tram and finally the bus back home. It wasn't that late and we probably could've gone to see the modern city of Jerusalem but we were energy drained. Before getting on the bus, we stopped for coffee and yummy pastry! The ride home took an hour an half, there was so much traffic. We finally made it home around 8:00pm.
