Day 130 - Sofia - Russian Church and National Gallery Museum

Friday, November 9th, 2018.

Sunshine and I had a girls' day out. We did our usual routine of breakfast and homework. Around noon, we left the house to spend some alone time. I have to confess that I was a little nervous about getting lost but what the heck, it was our last day in Sofia and I didn't want to spend it at home.

Sunshine and I walked around downtown, then we visited the Russian church. It had nice frescoes, then we walked to the crypt where you can write a wish and the saint will bring it to God for you. According to our tour guide, many of his wishes have come true. We'll see. Sunshine asked me what I wished for and I said that I just really want enlightenment and guidance so I can guide my family. OK, OK, I also wished for: salud, amor y dinero. Health, love, and money!

After that, we walked to the National Gallery Museum and saw Bulgarian art from the 20th century. It was different from the art we had seen in France and Italy. There were a lot of landscapes, peasants, animals, and portraits of men and women. Sunshine said I looked like a crazy lady because I wasn't only observing the paintings, I was sounding out the Cyrillic words out loud.

After the museum, we decided to find a restaurant where we could try some typical Bulgarian food. We found many small kebab places but we had our heart on sushi so we went back to Happy Grill, where we had eaten yesterday. At first, I felt guilty because we are here to try new food and new places but then, what the heck if we both wanted sushi so bad.

We had a great lunch and we promised ourselves that we would do it more often. Instead of going shopping, we decided to spend the money on more sushi!! We headed home and we made it without getting lost, yeah!

At home, we finally watched The Nightmare Before Christmas, which the kids wanted to watch on Halloween day. Daniel helped make the chicken teriyaki, which didn't turn out great because we didn't have all the ingredients.

Sunshine and I are ready for a new place, even though the boys aren't. [Gregory's note: Despite the murder-scene entry hall, the apartment is very nice with lots of space and light, comfy seating, and warm bathroom floors.] Anyway, we leave for Plovdiv tomorrow.

This was the name of the street where our apartment was. I have learned to take a picture in case I get lost!

Interior of the National Art Gallery. So nice to see an empty museum after the hordes in Paris and Rome!

The museum used to be the Royal Palace
