Day 97 - Zadar - Split
Saturday October 6th, 2018.
We woke up early even without an alarm clock. It was dark and cloudy. In the morning we had breakfast and got ready to go to the bus station. Gregory called Uber because of our suitcases. When the car arrived, we realized that we were not going to fit so Daniel and I rode with the suitcases while Gregory and Sunshine walked to the station. The driver was very friendly and he gave us advice as to what places to visit in Croatia, pretty much what we have in our itinerary. We had time for a coffee at the station. We finally hopped on the bus, which was not as nice as the other lines we have taken even though it's called Best Line. I hurt my neck chatting with the couple sitting behind me who was from Quebec. At least I got to practice my French.
We made it to Split at 3:00pm. Right away Gregory checked for Uber, then for fun asked the taxi drivers, who (again) quoted 20 euros. He walked away and called Uber, which was $5. The driver showed up in less than a minute. Because no cars are allowed in the old town, we were actually closer by foot but wheeling the suitcases through the old town to a place we didn't know wasn't appealing.
What a view! Split is beautiful. We drove all around the bay admiring the water, the trees, and the old buildings. The Uber driver left us in a small square because the streets were pedestrian only. We pulled our suitcases up a small hill, trying to use Google but the alleys were so narrow there was no GPS signal, and frankly, the streets are not exactly well marked. Luckily, the Airbnb host saw us in the street and called to us. Luckily, because even though we were around the corner, we were never going to find the door!
Anja met us out front and took us into the courtyard to the entry. The apartment is funky, shabby chic. We knew it was going to be a little funky because of the pictures but I have to say that it is a little more shabby than chic! Gregory and I were not thrilled but the kids were. Sunshine said immediately, "This is how I want my house! I could live here forever!" Daniel ran to the attic to check out his possible room.
The kids were excited with the narrow, spiral stairs, the window to get to the attic, and the rooftop patio (Anja showed us how to climb out the window). As for me, well, it felt too dark and cluttered but we should be OK for a week. Plus it's nice that everyone has their own bedroom, we have 2 bathrooms, and the location is amazing. We are literally in the middle of the old town, less than 5 minutes from the Riva, the main waterfront walk.
We are surrounded by medieval stone houses and stone alleyways. I feel like we are in a Disney house or something out of a storybook!
The kids stayed home while Gregory and I went to check to town and find the grocery store. We were very impressed with the beautiful palace and the Roman ruins! After an hour, we decided to go find the food and come back later at night.
We found a small grocery with very little food. We just got the basics for a dinner and for breakfast. We came home, had dinner, and when we were ready to leave, our moms (Gregory's and mine) called, so we spend some time talking to them and then we left for a night walk. The kids loved the city which was full of life -- everyone out in the cafes, bars, and discos. You could hear the music, the palm trees and bars were all lit up, and people were everywhere!
After walking around for an hour, a gelato and a nutella crepe we went back to our funky home!
