Day 94 - Zadar - Date with Gregov

Wednesday, October 3rd., 2018.

Today we stayed home all morning, reading and doing homework. After lunch, Gregory and I walked to the old town which is a medieval walled city. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zadar
We are a 20-minute walk from it. It is very pleasant to get there because you can walk near the water and watch the fish underneath all the small boats parked in the bay. You enter the old town through an impressive stone arch.

Gregory was on a mission, looking for a cafe that had Roman ruins inside. I don't know when or how he finds all this information. We walked into the wrong cafe at first, then we found it just across the street and we went in. It is just impressive to find Roman ruins everywhere. How do they survive so many wars and stay standing? The cafe was really neat so we decided to sit down and have a coffee and a pivo (beer).
I watched the kids playing on the plaza and thought how all the kids are similar all over the world! After a while, we walked by the cathedral tower, then to the Roman forum, admired the  ------ church and continued our walk straight ahead to a small church that was open. I walked in and I assumed they were praying the rosary. The inside was very simple, but what was interesting was hearing most of the old ladies praying in Croatian. After a while, it sounded like a meditation and it made me think about the sounds that some yogi practice while they meditate!
After that, we were going to walk home and pick up the kids, but since we were close to the restaurant that our host had recommended, we decided to go directly to the restaurant. Gregory suggested that the kids take an Uber. I was hesitant but since the kids didn't want to come at all, we just decided to enjoy our dinner alone! Apparently, it was too early because we were the only people inside the building. Gregory ordered the pork with ham and cheese inside and I ordered the risotto with gambi (rice with shrimps). The name of the restaurant was Giardin, it looked very Italian, maybe because they were playing Italian music or maybe because Croatia was governed by Venice in the old days.
Croatian food is a Mediterranean cuisine. They eat a lot of fish like sardines, tuna, moules, and squid. They also eat vegetables and a lot of olive oil. I have noticed that the groceries stores do not have that much variety of canned or processed food. You can hardly find any good fruit or fresh vegetables, but they do have lots of small markets where you can find fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, our host recommended we buy the meat and the bread in different stores. It is like Italy, where you visit different stores, every day to buy only what you need for the day!

Going back to the dinner, we had a great time and we finished eating early. We walked back home in the crisp night.
