Day 113 - Sarajevo

Tuesday, October 23, 2018.

Today we did our usual routine in the morning. I can't believe that I get up to walk outside in the cold and when I had the chance to walk in the sun, next to the water in Split, I didn't. Anyway, lesson learned, just do it! I'm a little disappointed in my lack of discipline of working out every day.

We are not walking as much as we used to, although today we did. I will tell you why. Well, we walked to the US Embassy to get some documents notarized. We decided to walk and it wasn't bad at all, we go to see the modern city of Sarajevo. When we got there, it was a little scary because there was a tall Bosnian soldier outside guarding the door. When we got to the right door, we had to go in separately. We waited our turn and in no time we got the papers signed after paying a lovely fee of $100 for two notarized documents. The consul was from Florida and was very friendly. He reminded us to vote.

After we left, we decided to check the bus schedule for our next stop. Not too many options but at least two more than what was listed on the website. We also walked to the train station and it was depressing. Outside so many refugees from Syria. Inside the station, empty. There are only two trains that run, one to Mostar and the other to Bihac. I just could not believe it. When we got out, Gregory asked me if we should take a taxi and I should have said yes because we kind of got lost and walked for a little over an hour instead of the 20 minutes it should have taken. We climbed some stairs and finally, I ran to a taxi that was dropping somebody and ask her to drive us. She laughed and told us that we were so close. She told us to continue walking straight but we couldn't see anything. Finally, someone asked us if we needed help and pointed us in the right direction. We were on top of our apartment, we just needed to go down the stairs with the tree mural and we were home!
We had lunch, I napped ( this is my favorite part of the trip that I wasn't able to do back home) and watched a movie. Did I mention that the apartment has a big TV? We are loving it!

Modern towers with giant screens

The blue tram still looks old. It was packed, I guess we won't be taking public transportation. Taxis are very cheap here!

Old train station contrasts with the modern tall building behind

There is a fountain outside the train station but the area was empty. Probably because there's nowhere to go! Inside there were many Syrian refugees smoking.

Another contrast, modern and tall buildings and houses still showing scars from the war.

You can see many old houses full of bullet holes.

At home with our babies!

Moose takes over the coach, we are the invaders!

Sweet Mattie was a little rebel the first couple of days and didn't want to go for the night walk but since then, she has been a very good girl.
