Day 58 - Nice liberation day and Antibes

Tuesday, August 28th, 2018.

Today we got up early to get a little bit of school work done before visiting Antibes. There is not much to be done for Sunshine since we are waiting to hear back from her teachers to download online books. Daniel is still working on his essay about our trip so far.

We left the house around 10:30am to take the bus to Antibes. The bus was close to the Hotel Meridien and when we got off the tram we saw the Place Massena full of WWII jeeps, complete with soldiers and civilians in 1940s outfits. Today was the anniversary of the liberation of Nice, and the city still celebrates this day with a parade and laying wreaths at the spots where the French partisans fell to German fire.

After taking some pictures, we walked to the bus stop. Again, the bus was only 1.50 euros. It took close to an hour to get there but we made some friends from Australia and Norway on the bus.
When we got there, it was time for lunch. We walked and saw all the nice yachts in the port and we sat on a shady bench to eat our lunch. After that, we walked into the old town of Antibes. It is a small town full of small stores and cafes. We saw the Grimaldi palace which is now the Picasso museum, the cathedral, the old walls and an art gallery where we met the artist who had painted a portrait of her daughter that looked like Sunshine.

After that, the kids were ready to go to the beach. Daniel said that we had promised to take him to a sandy beach, not an old town and certainly not to see the Picasso Museum! Luckily the beach was just next to the old wall and yes, there was sand! I was so happy and we also found some shade for Gregory because the sun was strong. The kids and I went into the water. We swam and saw fish -- not as many as in Marseille, but some and had a great time. Gregory wandered into town looking at art galleries.

Around 6:00pm we all agreed that it was time to go home for dinner. We didn't want to wait as long as we did for Monaco. This time we took the train home, which was much faster. We also chose to take the tram instead of the bus, which is faster and a much smoother ride but which meant a short hike to our home.

When we got home, I took a quick shower and got ready to go out for dinner with Gregory because it was our 19th anniversary! The kids stayed home happily and had pizza. We had a lovely dinner at an Indian restaurant. Gregory had chosen another restaurant with homemade food and local specialties but when I saw that it was mostly pasta or pizza, I choose something else, plus the homemade food had a 20 minute wait and I was starving.

We had a lovely time. I sounded like my mother in law! After that, we walked to the old town for a while and took the tram back home. Surprise, the kids were in bed!

Nice liberation day!
