Day 56 - Nice - Chateau
Sunday, Agust 26 2018.
Today we woke up late today and had a leisure breakfast. The kids were lazy and didn't want to do much, but Gregory had plans. He wanted to go to Antibes, but Daniel wanted to see the castle and the waterfall in Nice so we aimed to do it all.
I made baguette sandwiches for the road and off we went. First, we made a quick stop at the market Coursaleya. it was beautiful to see all the fruit, vegetables, fish and spices stands.
After that, we took the elevator up the mountain to see the Castle of Nice and the waterfall. It is a beautiful park with amazing views. We had our little picnic in the park, it was very nice and peaceful. By the time we finished, we thought it was too late to go to Antibes. I reminded Gregory that all the kids want is water and sun so we stayed in Nice and went to the beach. We went swimming while Gregory went to drink a beer by himself. It was a very nice and relaxing day.
We came home starving, Gregory wanted to stop to try the socca which our friend Virginie had recommended, but there was a big line at the restaurant and we said no, we just want to go home. We don't live exactly close to downtown, we have to take a tram and a bus, so an hour later, we were having a yummy dinner of salad and pasta!
We watched a movie and had a coffee ice-cream. Perfect day to finish our summer vacations. We start homeschool tomorrow morning before going to Monaco!
Here is some information from Wikipedia about the castle.
The Castle of Nice was a citadel used for military purposes. Built at the top of a hill, it stood overlooking the bay of Nice from the 11th century to the 18th century. It was besieged several times, especially in 1543 and in 1691, before it was taken by French troops in 1705 and finally destroyed in 1706 by command of Louis XIV.
Nowadays, Castle Hill is used as a park. It's the most famous public garden in Nice, and a "must see" place for the numerous tourists who visit the city. It offers many amazing panoramas, and provides a beautiful view all day long from sunrise to sundown, highlighting various landscapes depending on where one looks: the Harbor at sunrise, the Promenade des Anglais at sundown. That's why Castle Hill is called "the cradle of the sun".
