Day 17 - Tangiers - Madrid
We are getting used to getting up at 9:00am which is a decent hour considering that we have been going to bed at midnight or even 1:00am. We had our last breakfast at Suad’s house which is was very spacious and clean. It wasn’t as beautifully decorated as the previous one but at least it was quiet and we had our kitchen. Oh did I mention that it also had a washing machine! Our taxi driver friend was on time to take us to the airport. Gregory had read that we had to be on time for the flight because there were always a lot of people and also that people should make sure their suitcases weighed the right amount or they would fine you. Gregory ended up paying 14 euros extra for our backpack as carrying on just in case because he had read that they were very strict about the overhead compartments and bags. None of this was true, maybe because it was Wednesday. Did I mention that we got cheap flight tickets for 50 euros directly to Madrid? Of course, then we had to pay for each suitcase which was 35 euros, but at least it was an hour and a half flight instead of 9 hours by bus!
The flight was pleasant and fast. We arrived at Madrid at 4:30, went through customs and got an Uber to our new home. Our place in Madrid is tiny, few windows but it already feels like home because it has Wi-Fi! We got to settle for a little bit and then we went out for dinner. Unfortunately, it was 7:00pm when we got out and most of the places were closed, at least the restaurants. The good thing about our place is that is in the middle of downtown, full of bars, cafes, shops and lots of young people.
The kids chose a cafe place that looks like California. We had salads, bagels, crepes and smoothies, same prices as the U.S. but it was ok because I know the kiddos are feeling homesick!
After that, Gregory was super anxious and thirsty for a drink. Many of the cafes were full and we couldn’t find a table so he went to a bar while we went to a supermarket to get some groceries for tomorrow. We barely made it, they were closing so we hurried up and got some basics. I have to say that getting the groceries is a little bit stressful because I never know how many meals we are going to have at home and how many out. Sometimes I pack lunches, other times we eat late lunch or early dinner. Everything is so different. I have to remind myself that we are only on vacations and to plan one day at the time.
