Day 338- Flight from Krabi to Bangkok - Lunch in an American-style Diner - Free Kakigori - Movie at Terminal 21

Monday, June 10th, 2019

The title describes what we did today. Feeling lazy? Just a little bit. All I have to add is that coming back to the Smart Suites felt like coming home. I guess we call home the place that we recognize and where we feel comfortable.

The receptionist at Smart Suites informed us that they were full! Uh-oh! They let us leave our backpacks with our big suitcases (which they have been keeping for some weeks) while we walked to the Terminal 21 shopping center to see a movie. The interesting thing in Thailand is that before the movie starts, you have to stand and honor the king while they play a small video of his majesty. Check the video!

On the way, we stopped at an American-style diner that had burgers, hot dogs, chili, and other American favorites. Lucky for us, they also serve Thai food. We saw many locals taking pictures and ordering hamburgers and milkshakes. But we wanted Thai food. Street food is always great, but I wanted to sit at a table with air conditioning. [Gregory's note: we were Americans in Thailand in an American diner eating Thai food. Wrap your head around that one!]

After that, we went to an upscale bakery chain called After You. Gregory has a lot of points on Grab, so he had earned a free baby kakigori. We had no idea what it was, but Gregory pulled out his phone, opened the app, and ordered it online inside the shop. We had to wait about 10 minutes for them to prepare it and I was worried that we would miss our movie! I almost asked them to cancel the order. [Gregory's note: it was 2:30, the movie started at 3:30 -- well, the ads started at 3:30, but Lili loves to create drama where it doesn't exist.] Finally, it came out and it was delicious! I'm sure you're wondering what it is. You can Google pictures, but it is very fluffy shaved ice with condensed milk on a little bit of marzipan or crust, with slightly sweet beans. We gobbled it up and almost ordered another,, but we had to run to catch our movie.

We say Aladdin. We wanted to see Rocket Man but it doesn't open until June 21. It was good, not great. We criticized the scenery for looking like India, not Arabia, and for not using Middle Eastern actors -- at least Jasmine wasn't a blonde.

Afterward, we stopped at 7-Eleven for dinner. These little convenience stores have saved our lives! We walked back to Smart Suites, picked up our suitcases and took Grab to our next hotel near the airport. We had stayed in this hotel when we first arrived from India and needed to stay near the airport. That was 2 months ago and it's funny that back then, the hotel looked really nice and clean. This time, it looked cheap and not so great. I mean it's fine, but after staying in so many nice hotels in Laos and Thailand, this one just seemed pretty basic. The good thing is that it was clean and great for one night!
