Day 320 - Cruise by the Mekong River in Luang Prabang, Laos.

Thursday, May 23rd, 2019.

Today we slept in and took it very easy in the morning. We were all feeling lazy and wanted to enjoy our beautiful hotel. We had a great breakfast. I knew I had to write, but instead, I read all morning! What a luxury! I finished the book “Return to the little coffee shop of Kabul” by Deborah Rodriguez. I recommend it. You will learn about the culture of Afghanistan.

Around 3:00pm, we left our hotel, we borrowed an umbrella to protect ourselves from the strong rays of the sun. This time we are staying very close to the Mekong river. We only walked a few minutes and we had the beautiful view of palms and the river. We sat in a restaurant near the river and had a great lunch. I’m really enjoying our family conversations at the table. I think the trip has brought us closer.

Afterward, the kids didn’t want to join us for a cruise by the river. They went back to the hotel and Gregory and I went looking for a cruise. We walked by the river and asked for prices of the cruises. Where we started it was cheaper but the conditions of the boat were not really nice. The closer we got to the peninsula, the more expensive they got.

Finally, Gregory made up his mind and decided to go for the nice cruise that includes a drink. You get what you pay for. I asked the owner if it was going to rain and of course, he said no but it did. At first, the light was beautiful and we got an amazing view of the mountains, the sky, and the vegetation. We got a delicious mojito and enjoyed ourselves. After an hour, it started to rain very hard. Luckily the boat had a roof. The staff brought us towels and we just sat there watching the rain and lightning with the other 7 people. The cruise lasted two hours.

After the cruise, we walked through the main street, looking for a place to grab a drink. The street is beautifully lit with all sorts of lights. They were many small lanterns hanging by the trees giving a beautiful atmosphere. I love this street full of small cafes and restaurants. It is very nicely decorated. The food prices are higher here because is mostly for tourists. We sat in a restaurant to share a baguette and have something to drink. When we finished, we went back to the hotel to pick up Sunshine who was waiting for us. I really wanted her to buy new pants, the ones she bought in India are full of holes. They had been fixed once in Vietnam but now the holes are huge! Of course, she didn’t find anything that she liked. I bought more bamboo straws to bring for presents to friends and t-shirt for Daniel who never buys anything for himself!

We also bought coconut pancakes as treat and then we walked back to our hotel. We are very comfortable here and will stay for two extra nights!
