Day 290 - Hanoi - Old Quarter - Train Street

Tuesday, April 23, 2019.

Today we just wanted to rest, so we decided to stay at the hotel all morning. The staff is super friendly and every time they see us, Smiley says "Isabella, Lili hello." We also enjoy the breakfast here, they offer so much food and variety compared to other hotels where we have stayed.

When hunger strikes, one of the members of the family starts calling the others and it is time to go out hunting for food. [Gregory's note: I wanted to make it to "Beer Street" in the old quarter, a 15-minute walk, but Lili got too hangry along the way.] We settled for banh mi (sandwiches) in a tiny place on the second floor with AC. Afterward, Gregory wanted to drink a beer on Beer Street. It was noisy with scooters beeping everywhere. We found a little place with a plastic table and stools and we sat for a drink. Later, we walked around the old quarter taking pictures and videos of all the stores and the busy streets of Hanoi. We noticed that each area is devoted to a specific trade. Somehow we ended up in blacksmith road and it was dirty and not so fun. We took a Grab back to our hotel area. When we got there, we decided to go back to train street to see the train pass by.

It was really fun to see how many tourists come and sit outside waiting for the train. It is very impressive to see, hear and feel the train so close to your body. Everyone cheers when the train is coming, they take pictures and videos and in one minute, the whole show is over! Everyone starts moving their chairs back to the sidewalk and continues drinking and chatting. We didn't know that there was a second train at 7:15pm so we got to see two trains, whoo hoo!

After we finished our drinks we went back to the hotel to finish packing. We leave tomorrow morning for Cat Ba and Ha Long Bay!
