Day 281 - Bus from Mandalay to Yangon

Sunday, April 14th, 2019.

Well, nothing exciting to write about today. We pretty much spend all day on the road from Myanmar to Yangon. We were happily surprised by our nice VIP bus with 3 seats across and plenty of space to recline! It also had entertainment and Wifi. The ride was smooth and we only made two break stops.

The bad ride was from the bus station, which was outside Yangon, to our hotel. We called Grab. At first, the driver was going fast because the streets were empty but then he tried to take a shortcut and that’s when traffic got bad. It was fun to watch and pass all the people throwing water at the motorcycles and light trucks filled with people on the back, but after an hour sitting on plastic-covered seats, we were done!

Gregory tried to tell the driver to take the main road because Google Maps said that there was no traffic there but the driver just ignored him. I could tell that he was in a rush to get to a party and he spent a lot of the time on his cell phone. Daniel was just laughing because I was translating in Spanish saying things like: “ I should not have taken this tourist, I’m going to be late for the party” or “save a beer for me”. The jokes were no longer funny after an hour and a half of driving. We finally made it to Hotel Vista, where we had left our suitcases. It felt like coming home to see the familiar smiling faces welcoming us!

The other good news is that our credit card had arrived, finally! We got settled, went out for dinner near the hotel then went back to our rooms. Gregory was disappointed to see that the Havana bar was closed, he desperately needed a drink. It was shocking to see the street so quiet and empty -- everything was closed for Thingyan!
