Day 102 - Hvar Island

The highlight of our day in Hvar, meeting great people from San Francisco, CA.  Doug, Laura, and son Jordan

 Thursday, October 11th, 2018.

What a difference it makes when we make plans the night before. We knew that the ferry left at 9:40 to Hvar, the island that everyone recommended. It took us 15 minutes to walk to the port and when we wanted to buy the tickets to the ferry, but the lady told us that we didn't have time because the ferry was leaving. We couldn't believe it because it was only 9:30am. She said that was the departure time and that we could take the 10:00am with a different line.

Tip: Do not trust schedules online in Croatia because they may not be accurate!

Luckily, we were able to take the 10am catamaran which only takes 1 hour for the same price. We were excited to take a boat again. We got settled and everyone got their books out. Gregory and Sunshine are thrilled to have found good "real" books on the shelf of our apartment. It's not the same to read from your computer or your Kindle!

Before we knew it, we were there! We got off the ferry and we immediately saw a medieval fortress up on the hill. We climbed up to see it. The view was amazing. When we made it to the top, we sat on a bench to have our lunch. After relaxing in the warm sun, we decided to climb back down and see the old town.

The main plaza is where all the cafes and restaurants (and bars and discos at night) were. Then we walked all around the small town, through the rocky streets. After that, Gregory told us that he wanted to walk to the old port. We found a cove with a pebble beach on our way and we decided to stay there for a while. We met there a very nice family from San Francisco. First, Gregory started to chat with them. I was trying to understand the complicated history of Sarajevo in the book that I was reading, but when I saw that Gregory wasn't coming back and Sunshine was with him as well, I decided to join them.

What a delightful afternoon we had. The family had lived abroad like we had so it was very easy to chat about traveling and different experiences that we had had while living abroad. Before we knew it, it was 5:00 o clock and the kids were hungry. We exchange information and promised to stay in touch. We headed to the old town to look for food. I wanted to sit down in a restaurant to kill time but mostly because I had to go to the bathroom, which is always my issue but we found a nice hotel and we all used the restroom. After that issue is solved, I can eat anywhere. We got our drinks in one place, our pizza slices in another, and had a satisfying dinner by the port.

We had to wait for our ferry to arrive, along with a few hundred other people. It arrived close to on time at 7:20 and arrived in Split at 9:00pm. We walked home and made ourselves a hot drink. The temperatures drop a lot a night and I had frozen feet from my wet sandals. At night, we made plans for our next destination: Dubrovnik!

Tip: If you have to go to the bathroom, find a hotel, walk in confidently like you were staying there and find the bathroom!
